Small bathrooms are a thing of the past now, and modern homes today have much larger, brighter and more functional bathrooms. They also have more bathrooms than were used in the past. All homes require at least one bathroom, most modern homes have one and one half or more. Ideally, every bedroom should have its own bath, however this is seldom possible.

Bathrooms should be located near the bedroom and living areas of the house. If the house is small, one bath may be sufficient. In this case, locate the bathroom in a place where it will be most convenient. Often the design of the house will indicate the minimum number of baths needed. A two story design requires at least one and one half baths, a full bath on the first floor near the living area. A half bath is one that does not have all three major fixtures. It usually has only a water closet and lavatory. A split-level house will also require at least one and one half baths. Since the bedrooms are located on the upper level away from the living area, the need for another bath on a lower level becomes evident. A large ranch house will require a minimum of 1 baths. The bedrooms are usually located in a wing of the house away from the living area, and convenience dictates a second bath.

When designing a floor plan you also want to make sure that in the hall ways and high traffic areas that there is more than enough room to get around. Bathrooms within the floor plan can really do great things for the design if it is executed properly and time is spent going over different ideas. Remember that when designing the bathroom for a floor plan that you allow enough space for whatever items you want to incorporate within your design. When I was young, bathrooms were just functional. I have a dream bathroom in my head, which is waiting for when I build my first house!
